Proper cleaning and care of a laminate countertop is essential. By following these simple guidelines suggested by Formica* and International Counter Tops Ltd., a laminate countertop will last for years to come.
General Cleaning
- In most cases a non-abrasive cloth with soap and water will clean the countertop.
- Make sure the countertop is never flooded with water, especially near mitres or joints, since water can penetrate through and cause glue failure or swelling of the particle board. Always dry the surface completely.
- If dirt or residue remains use only a nylon bristled brush with a mild detergent and water. Always rinse and dry the surface. Never use any abrasive brushes, cleaners, or cloths.
- If streaks remain, most often on the glossy laminate surface, use a mild glass cleaner.
Chemical Damage
Never use cleaners containing acid, alkali, or sodium hypochlorite. These cleaners will permanently discolor and possibly corrode the countertop surface.
Some examples are:
- Drain cleaners
- chlorine bleach
- oven cleaners
- Rust removers
- tub and tile cleaners
- some ‘countertop cleaners’
Special Cleaning
- To remove residual glue, paint or varnish, use a solvent like mineral spirits or varsol. Use sparingly.
- Some products such as hair dyes and peroxide will permanently stain the laminate. For these stains use a paste of baking soda and water. Do not rub this paste in the surface for it is slightly abrasive. Let it sit on the surface to pull out the stain then wipe and rinse with water.
Protection
- Do not pound, hammer, or chop on the laminate surface without using cutting boards or a protective surface.
- Hot objects should not be placed on laminate surfaces such as cookware, curling irons etc. Any exposure to temperatures of 140 F (60 C) or higher may damage the laminate.
- Do not slide objects, such as plates or glasses on surface.
- Do not soak or leave countertops wet.
